BME graduate student Rachel Nordberg has been selected to receive a NASA/NC Space Grant Graduate Research Fellowship. This fellowship program provides add-on support for graduate students to supplement and enhance basic research support. The objective of this research fellowship opportunity is to encourage talented individuals to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields that support NASA’s mission. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program requires that students participate in an active, identified research activity in STEM that has aerospace and NASA applications. This is a highly competitive fellowship program, with merit-based awards for high academic achievement and promise in the field.

Rachel has also been awarded a Carol and Edward Smithwick Summer Research Fellowship from The Graduate School at UNC. This program is supported by private donors and is intended to help graduate students focus exclusively on their dissertation research. Students are selected for their quality of work, their readiness to productively use the summer time, their mentors’ willingness to work with them and provide guidance, and the fact that they have had minimal previous non-service funding.

Congratulations to Rachel for these exciting opportunities!
