An elected member of the National Academy of Engineering (Interdisciplinary Engineering and Special Fields Section), Dr. George Ligler is a recognized leader in the areas of systems integration/engineering and product management services. He has joined the BME department after 29 years as proprietor of his consulting firm GTL Associates. In this role, he has provided consulting in telecommunications, computer system and hardware/software engineering for a wide range of applications, and information management services to more than 40 clients in the United States, Europe and Asia. Prior to forming GTL Associates, he was a Project/Research Manager at Texas Instruments, Director of Engineering at the Burroughs Special Systems Division, President of Aydin Controls Division (computer graphics), and a Division and Group Vice President at Computer Sciences Corporation. Additionally, he has served on BME’s Industrial Advisory Board since 2015. George’s graduate studies at Oxford were supported by a Rhodes Scholarship.

Co-author of 5 additional reports of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and major contributor to 6 major aviation standards used today on a worldwide basis for aircraft navigation and surveillance.

Research Interests

Biomedical devices, interdisciplinary system engineering
My research interests are (1) the continued expansion of embedded microprocessor-based systems and products into a wide variety of applications, particularly in biomedical engineering; (2) the multi-disciplinary design, implementation, and integration of major, distributed computer and telecommunications systems; (3) business process reengineering driving the development of information technology systems; and (4) manned and unmanned aircraft communications, navigation and surveillance systems for the U.S. National Airspace System and worldwide aviation.
