In the BME department, students are given access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities at both UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State University. This unique relationship offers students a wealth of opportunities for research, group collaboration, coursework, and exposure to experts in medicine and engineering. While all of the classes undergraduate students need to complete their degree are available on their home campus, students may choose to take courses on either campus. Students never have to travel to the partner campus; the joint program simply offers additional opportunities.

The nationally ranked UNC Hospitals and Medical School provide an excellent clinical environment for our students to gain experience in medicine. The NC State College of Engineering is one of the world’s finest engineering and computer science schools. NC State is also home to nationally top ranked school of veterinary medicine. The unique partnership that UNC has with NC State provides students with flexibility and access to significant resources at two great institutions, resulting in a high-quality education and a variety of opportunities upon graduation.

After completing core courses and being admitted through a competitive process to the program, students are effectively admitted to the partner campus. Students have full standing at both NC State and UNC. Upon graduation, the diploma bears the seals and signatures of both universities, and students receive an ABET-accredited degree in Biomedical and Health Sciences Engineering.

Steps to Degree

Students studying biomedical engineering at NC State and UNC are challenged with a curriculum at the interface of engineering and medicine. During the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of engineering. These courses include Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology and provide the foundation for future engineering courses. Once accepted into the program, students take engineering courses in mechanics, circuits, computer programming, and materials, followed by specialized courses in biomedical engineering. The design process is woven throughout the curriculum. Students gain skills in manufacturing processes and biological synthesis while following the guidelines for FDA approval for a medical device.

Career Paths

Biomedical engineers are employed by hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, medical device and testing companies, consulting firms, government agencies, universities, and biotech companies.  Many graduates further their education by attending graduate or professional school. Biomedical engineering (BME) provides a well-rounded science education to students interested in changing the world of medicine and technology. Biomedical

engineers are responsible for such things as tissue engineering, drug delivery devices, prosthetic devices, and medical imaging technology development (such as MRI, CT, Ultrasound and X-ray). There are many opportunities for students after graduation. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that entry level jobs available to students with a B.S. degree in the field of BME will continue to grow.
