The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) has announced the induction to its College of Fellows of two current and one recent UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering Professors.  The Joint Department’s inductees include:  Dr. Koji SodeWilliam R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering, elected for “engineering enzymes and devices that have improved the quality of life for millions of diabetics worldwide;” Dr. Ke Cheng, Professor, Molecular Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmacy, elected for “engineering and medicine research, practice, or education” and “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of medical and biological engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to bioengineering education;” and Dr. Zhen Gu, through 2018 UNC/NC State Professor of Biomedical Engineering (now Department of Bioengineering, UCLA), elected for “engineering and medicine research, practice, or education” and to “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of medical and biological engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to bioengineering education.”

A formal induction ceremony was held during the AIMBE Annual Meeting at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC on March 25, 2019.  This election is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to a medical and biological engineers. AIMBE College of Fellows is comprised of the top 2% of medical and biological engineers: fellows include 2 Nobel Prize laureates, 17 Fellows have received the Presidential Medal of Science and/or Technology and Innovation, and 158 have also been inducted to the National Academy of Engineering, 72 to the National Academy of Medicine and 31 to the National Academy of Sciences.
