The National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) honors the best of American ingenuity: 603 inventors have been inducted since the organization’s founding in 1973 and NC State is very well represented with four current faculty members who are NIHF inductees. Actually, three faculty are in the College of Engineering, including our BME Ross Lampe Distinguished Professor Frances Ligler, who was inducted in 2017.

Frances Ligler is indeed one of just six women who have been inducted into NIHF and elected to both the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Inventors, another organization that celebrates American inventors in academia and the non-profit work sector. There are only forty-five women inducted to the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and from the 22 living members, two are working at NC State. With four active faculty members who are NIHF inductees, NC State ranks second in the world, alongside Stanford. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) leads the way with seven members.
