The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a 5-year Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) grant to BME Assistant Professor Xiaogang Hu for his research in “Robust Decoding of Neural Command for Real Time Human Machine Interactions.” Prof. Hu aims to decode the descending neural command/drive that controls individual finger movement, by extracting spinal motoneuron discharge activities using source separation of high-density EMG signals. This research can have profound impact on the general field of human-machine interaction and neural rehabilitation. It can also provide new strategies for precisely controlling rehabilitative or assistive devices in individuals with chronic conditions and in the elderly, in order to further improve their ability of living independently. Prof. Hu will integrate his research with education through graduate and undergraduate new course development and expansion of existing courses. Congratulations to Assistant Professor Xiaogang Hu!
