We want to help you learn more about graduate school and whether it is right for you. The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at NC State is hosting an event for women who are considering graduate school in the next 1-2 years. The event will be held in Raleigh, NC, October 11-12, 2018, and it will include social events, networking with other women (more than 30% of our PhD students are female!), sessions to learn about the department, and free time to explore the city. Do you need to be sure you will attend graduate school to come? Absolutely not! The purpose of the event is to learn more about graduate school and the job opportunities that can arise. You can also learn more about the Triangle area, which is ranked in the top ten places to live in the U.S.
Do you need to be sure you want to focus on the field of Industrial and Systems Engineering? Definitely not—we will have other programs represented at various times during the day including Operations Research, manufacturing, and others. You will also learn that Industrial and Systems Engineering is a broad major focused on making or doing things better; graduate students can have backgrounds in engineering, computer science, math, statistics, or other backgrounds. Do you need to be sure you want to come to NC State? Not at all. You will learn something about applications and admissions to graduate school, which can help you no matter where you go. We think some people may find a good match in our program while we will have helped others decide whether graduate school is right for them.
How much will it cost? Once you get to campus all expenses are paid! We will intentionally keep the event small to enhance the experience while you are here, and I will pay for two nights of lodging and for event food for all participants selected to attend. We identified potential participants within driving distance to make it easier for you to come.
So what should you do? If this piques your interest, then submit an application using the link below. You will be asked to provide some information about yourself, a school transcript, a statement about your interest in the program (< 1 page), and the names and contact information for 2 references. Priority will be given to applicants who are 1-2 years away from a potential application for graduate school and to students with a possible interest in obtaining a PhD.
