Recent stories published by WRAL TechWire and NC State featured the research accomplishments of several BME faculty and students. The article highlights the findings of a team led by Dr. Ashley Brown, Assistant Professor in the department. The group developed a potential rapid-response heart attack solution: a two-part drug delivery system which may act more quickly and be less invasive than surgery. The solution uses nanogel spheres to deliver the relevant drugs specifically to blocked blood vessels where they can dissolve the causal clots. The researchers anticipate this treatment will help reduce scar tissue and other blood vessel damage. The paper, “Targeted Treatment of Ischemic and Fibrotic Complications of Myocardial Infarction Using a Dual-Delivery Microgel Therapeutic,” was published in ACS Nano, and can be found here.
