Faculty from BME recently participated in a Research “Speed Dating” event that was held in conjunction with the UNC Department of Surgery and the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. The goal of the short six minute meetings was to spur innovation and collaboration between departments by allowing partners to develop solutions for problems that are faced by the medical community. The top three ideas, decided by popular vote, were given pilot funding to engineer their designs. Our own Dr. David Lalush and Dr. Helen Huang tied for first place for their ideas. Dr. Lalush teamed up with Dr. Kandace McGuire from UNC’s Surgical Oncology group to pitch using PET/MRI to improve physicians’ ability to assess patient response to treatment and better plan for surgery. Dr. Huang partnered with Dr. Loree Kalliainen from UNC’s Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery group and proposed a project to improve upper limb prosthetics to make them more intuitive, functional, and responsive for patients with amputations. Congratulations to both teams and to all who participated in the event!
